For those not wanting to listen to me rant in fangirlish glee, skip this next part and go to the bottom for my latest news.
So, I've taken this time on my only two days off to re-kindle my love for "Alice in Wonderland". I'm re-reading my 'ye olde' copy of both that and "Through the Looking Glass" and remembering what an awesome book it really is. I figure it'll break me though when "Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland" comes out next week...
I'm going to watch it, of course, I mean, I love the story no matter how many times it's retold, and there's always something I like about the characters in it. I've got a love for the White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat really. Even in "The Looking Glass Wars" and "Seeing Redd" (two wonderful little children's books set in an alternate Wonderland) I found that the Cat was a sinister creature who brought fear and literally had to be killed nine times before he could die, and Bibwit was a kindly natured albino male with an unusual bloodline and a duty to teach, but I still adored both of these characters in all their entirety. The only time I've really changed my liking of characters was in the three Zenescape Wonderland series. I confess, the insane and bloodthirsty psychopath Hatter took my vote - even if the Cheshire Cat was capable of parting one's head with one's shoulders in one fell swoop.
So I'm hoping that "Tim Burton's Johnny Depp in another film starring Johnny Depp with Johnny Depp acting the same part he does over and over" will at least attempt to make me follow in the footsteps of the other remakes of Wonderland and make me not regret being an Alice's Adventures in Wonderland fangirl.
(Just for the record, I actually do like Johnny Depp as an actor. It's just a little joke I have when actors star in films that are similar. Robert de Niro is my other favourite to do this with.)
Anyway, that little rant aside, it's time to talk about "Heart no Kuni no Alice".
Being the fangirl I am, I always seek out alternate Wonderland themed things. They attract me like a moth to a flame. I can't really help it! They're not always brilliant, I must admit...."Gakuen Alice" - although not really trying to be Wonderland themed at all - wasn't my favourtie manga.
"Alice in Underground" was relatively fun despite being short and a one-shot (the tales of the tortured little White rabbit), I've yet to read "Alice Kara Mahou", Miyuki-chan in Wonderland will always amuse me greatly (bet CLAMP are kicking themselves for that one), and "Alice Turn Back Clock" just looks confusing. There's been a few others too, but I can't really remember them, or be bothered looking them up right now.
I seem to have rambled again...
So, "Heart no...."
I can honestly say I'm enjoying this one at the minute. I'm on chapter 8 so far and I'm really enjoying the art style and general theme of the manga. A summary is in order I think, as well as my first review. (\o/)
It's a shojou (girl themed) harem (many boys after or with one girl) manga about Alice Liddle who is plunged into Wonderland head first and forced to take part in a 'game' of sorts as planned by the resident White Rabbit Peter White. Forced to drink a strange potion that holds her to this 'game' Alice finds herself caught in the middle of gang violence, dangerous heirarchy, and caught in the obsessive grasp of Mr White. She learns that as she meets more people, the liquid in the empty potion glass begins to refill slowly, and when it is full the theory is that she'll be able to go home. Of course things don't always go as smoothly do they?
Sickly Incubi, trigger happy residents, obsessive rabbits, mysterious gentlemen, and the fact that everyone seems intent on either killing her or loving her stands in our Heroine's way, and it just keeps getting worse!!!
If you're into something that's just relaxing to read, has a decent enough storyline to keep the ball rolling, and like seeing bishonen boys shooting the s**t out of each other, then this one's probably for you.
If you want a complex ground breaking storyline and characters with mysterious pasts and generally more of an upstream feel like "Death Note", then you might want to give it a miss.
Me? I love it so far. As usual I find myself drawn to Peter White and the Fairground Cat Boris. (Only this time it's because Peter is creepy, trigger happy and dangerously obsessive, and because Boris has himself sexy little punk style going on.) So I'd suggest people at least give it a read. It's not going to change your life, but it is going to be entertaining on a rainy day.
EDIT: Okay.......changed my mind. Read a few more chapters and now I think it's moved up in my standards. I think everyone should at least try this one now....
Manga reading aside, I've been playing Aliens VS Predator for the Xbox360 with Atemu1 and Umptermention. It's reminded me how good the old games were, it really has, before AVP was a movie franchise and when creeping down hallways with only a torch and a motion tracker was truly terrifying.
I'm pretty much drawn to the Alien missions at present. There's nothing more satisfying than plunging your toothy little tongue into the back of someone's skull, or forcing them to be the proud parent of a new little killing machine. <3
And then there's Left 4 Dead 2. One would think I'd be bored of it by now, but the utter panic when the AI director screws you over and throws 3 goddamn tanks at you in the one bloody level of the one bloody campaign still hasn't lost its charm.
I've just applied to go on a mini teaching info day in Manchester. Hopefully it will set me straight when I decide to re-apply for the PGCE process. I'm nervous about going, but excited because it may define my career path finally and help me to do well in the PGCE interviews.
Anyway, other main news, the Midlands Expo!
It was fantastic. I mean that. Utterly fantastic.
I can't even thank the awesome people I hung around with all day for putting up with me tagging along with their group. <3
You're all awesome. Truly.
And yes, I was resident Bleach emo Kira Izuru for this one.
The cosplay's really grown on me. It's fun to play him and have people be amazed that there really is one person in the world who likes him enough to cosplay him XD
I'm looking forward to seeing all the awesome peoples again and hope that the next time we meet will be just as awesome as the last.
And I've started on my Shinji/Ichigo picture for Kakaheishi...so there!
